Choosing Timber and Finish for Everyday Use

The right timber is not only a question of colour. Its grain, hardness, movement, and finish all affect how a piece looks, feels, and behaves through ordinary use.

Consider the room before the species

A dining surface has to tolerate frequent wiping and occasional spills. Kitchen items encounter moisture and changes in temperature. Built-ins are often judged by how they sit alongside floors, paint, and natural light. Start with the environment and the level of contact the surface will receive.

Grain and colour are part of the design

No two boards are identical. Straight grain can read as calm and ordered, while more figured sections bring movement. A sample is useful for judging undertones, but it should be viewed in the room where the finished work will live.

Choose a finish for maintenance, not only sheen

Oil finishes can keep a tactile, low-sheen surface and may allow local maintenance. Other finishes can offer a different level of protection or a different visual effect. The appropriate choice depends on use, cleaning habits, and how readily the surface should be repaired in the future.
